Le jeudi 6 mars 1862, surlendemain du Mardi gras, cinq femmes du village de La Jonchère se présentaient au bureau de police de Bougival.

Elles racontaient que depuis deux jours personne n’avait aperçu une de leurs voisines, la veuve Lerouge, qui habitait seule une maisonnette isolée. À plusieurs reprises, elles avaient frappé en vain. Les fenêtres comme la porte étant exactement fermées, il avait été impossible de jeter un coup d’oeil à l’intérieur. Ce silence, cette disparition les inquiétaient. Redoutant un crime, ou tout au moins un accident, elles demandaient que la «Justice» voulût bien, pour les rassurer, forcer la porte et pénétrer dans la maison.

Bougival est un pays aimable, peuplé tous les dimanches de canotiers et de canotières; on y relève beaucoup de délits, mais les crimes y sont rares. Le commissaire refusa donc d’abord de se rendre à la prière des solliciteuses. Cependant elles firent si bien, elles insistèrent tant et si longtemps, que le magistrat fatigué céda. Il envoya chercher le brigadier de gendarmerie et deux de ses hommes, requit un serrurier et, ainsi accompagné, suivit les voisines de la veuve Lerouge.

La Jonchère doit quelque célébrité à l’inventeur du chemin de fer à glissement qui, depuis plusieurs années, y fait avec plus de persévérance que de succès des expériences publiques de son système. C’est un hameau sans importance, assis sur la pente du coteau qui domine la Seine, entre la Malmaison et Bougival. Il est à vingt minutes environ de la grande route qui va de Paris à Saint-Germain en passant par Rueil et Port-Marly. Un chemin escarpé, inconnu aux ponts et chaussées, y conduit.

La petite troupe, les gendarmes en tête, suivit donc la large chaussée qui endigue la Seine à cet endroit, et bientôt, tournant à droite, s’engagea dans le chemin de traverse, bordé de murs et profondément encaissé.

Après quelques centaines de pas, on arriva devant une habitation aussi modeste que possible, mais d’honnête apparence. Cette maison, cette chaumière plutôt, devait avoir été bâtie par quelque boutiquier parisien, amoureux de la belle nature, car tous les arbres avaient été soigneusement abattus. Plus profonde que large, elle se composait d’un rez-de-chaussée de deux pièces, avec un grenier au-dessus. Autour s’étendait un jardin à peine entretenu, mal protégé contre les maraudeurs par un mur en pierres sèches d’un mètre de haut environ, qui encore s’écroulait par places. Une légère grille de bois tournant dans des attaches de fil de fer donnait accès dans le jardin.
